When you think of Chris Brown, you might think of a smiling R&B heartthrob. But all that could change when “The Heist,” which begins production in September, comes out.

In it, he’ll be playing a murderous bank robber.

“It’s a movie called ‘The Heist’ that I’m doing with T.I., Idris Elba and Matt Dillon,” he told MTV News recently at the Teen Choice Awards, where he walked away with four awards.

He kept further details close to his chest. “I’m playing a killer. I’m not going to give anything else away!” he said. “It’s a bank-robbing movie, so it’s one of those action-packed films. You get a little different side of me in that movie.”

Those ideas were also put forth by T.I. when MTV News spoke with him about this and other film projects back in June.

“You can definitely expect action, definitely,” he said. “It will be very entertaining.

“It’s a new-age, young, hip-hop [version of] ‘Heat,’ ” Tip continued, referring to the 1995 flick that brought Robert De Niro and Al Pacino together. “These are young, cool, well-dressed, articulate bank robbers. [Chris] be the little homey.”

But “Heist” isn’t the only movie Brown is adding to his résumé. He’s also expected to start work on several other movies, including “Traded” and the basketball flick “Phenom,” both of which are slated for release next year.

Brown has said he hopes his acting will make him a better performer when it comes to his live shows. “At the end of the day, I’m going to focus on my music first,” he said. “[But] me being onstage enhances me being in the movie, and then me being in the movie — acting, catching characters — gives me time to transform into a different character onstage.”

Bow Wow

Two more albums and Bow Wow says he’s ready to call it a night. The onetime teen titan says he’s retiring from the rap game — maybe as early as the age of 22.

“I wanna be the next Will Smith,” the 21-year-old recently said, restating his growing passion for acting while sitting poolside at L.A.’s Le Montrose Suite Hotel. “After the eighth album, I’m done. I already feel it. I love acting. I love my music like I said, but I feel it. After this one, probably one more in me and that’s eight. Like, I’m one [album] behind Nas, and that’s crazy.”

LP number seven comes out later this year. It’s called The Pedigree, and he won’t be hiding his potty mouth.

“It’s funny because everybody always wants to talk about, you know, ‘Bow Wow doesn’t curse. He’s clean,’ which is true,” he explained. “I think a lot of people that are jumping on Bow Wow now are new people, and if you listen to my first album, I was being bad on my first album. Being that that’s the first album, a lot of people probably didn’t catch on then. But I was already saying words at 13 that I probably shouldn’t be saying. If you go back and listen to my first album, every song is bleeped out. You’ll notice words that are being bleeped out. Now it’s really nothing, and I’m looking at y’all like, ‘What’s the big fuss about?’ Like I said, that’s just me being me. I’m not saying that my album is profane. I still gotta remember about the little kids.

“It’s kinda tough to walk it,” he continued, talking about straddling the line between being a grown-up and still appealing to the youth. “I still have the younger generation. The younger kids look up to me. Then again, I have that other fanbase who was with me from the jump who are now adults too. And it’s almost like I gotta cater to both, but if I miss one of ‘em, they’ll go find that other person to fill that slot.”

From adult music to adult films? No, not really. Bow isn’t doing X-rated movies, but he did have to take his clothes off and lay down with a porn star for role as a comedian on “Entourage.”

“I know the girls, they’re going to go crazy when they see it,” he said of his appearance on the HBO series. “The ladies are gonna go crazy when they see Bow Wow’s first sex scene. It’s crazy ’cause for me, it was normal. It was normal, but I know when I look back at it, when I see it, I’m gonna be like, ‘Damn! Look at this. This is crazy!’ I stun myself sometimes, I can’t even front.

“It was with a porn star. I don’t know her name,” he said of the actress. “She probably watching this like, ‘What?! I did a scene with him, and he doesn’t remember my name?!’ Nah, I don’t remember her name, but she was bad though. She was baaaaad! I was cool. I was comfortable with it. I was definitely comfortable with it. It is what it is — normal stuff that happens.”

The fifth season of “Entourage” debuts in September. Meanwhile, Bow has been trying to warm things up for his LP. He just released the videos for “Big Bank Take Lil Bank” and the Soulja Boy-featuring “Marco Polo.”

Luke is a drug dealer. Small-timer. Peddles weed out of a pushcart to high school classmates, mostly.

You’d think he’d be popular, but no.

“He’s kind of like the pizza guy,” says Jonathan Levine, who knows all about Luke, the central character of The Wackness, Levine’s semi-autobiographical coming-of-age movie.

Luke is Levine, circa 1994, the year Levine graduated from high school.

“But I didn’t sell drugs,” the writer-director says. Other details are different, too. The movie is a fictionalized attempt to capture an important emotional turning point in Levine’s life.

Luke, who is played by Josh Peck, has weekly sessions with an eccentric shrink (Ben Kingsley), whom he pays with weed. The shrink has a young, unhappy wife (Famke Janssen) and a stepdaughter (Olivia Thirlby) who catches Luke’s eye. She’s out of his league, but he can dream, can’t he?

The movie is mostly about his separate, deepening relationships with these two, the shrink and his stepdaughter. But Luke also has family issues, not to mention an intimidating supplier (played by Method Man). We also meet some off-kilter regular customers (Jane Adams, Mary-Kate Olsen).

Peck is best known for the role of Josh on Nickelodeon’s Josh & Drake. He said he related to the character of Luke on several levels. Neither of them peaked in high school, he says.

“We had a shared feeling that we were the most popular of the unpopular kids in school,” he says.

Then there was Luke’s unusual friendship with his much older psychiatrist. They both are going through life crises. They hang out together. At times, the older man acts more like a kid than the young patient does.

Peck grew up in New York City without a father.

“I understood not having traditional support systems and using people not your family as anchors,” he says. Peck said he had a Big Brother. Thirteen years after they met, they still are close, he says.

The film could be a huge career boost for the 21-year-old Peck. He was a chubby teen when he got the role in Josh & Drake in 2004. Then he realized how much he weighed limited the kinds of roles he could take. He lost weight so that he could get roles such as this one.

He comes across as a serious young actor who talks about preparing for roles by conducting “investigations into my psyche” and “exploring things that normally you want to go away.”

Another connection to Luke is that Peck is a “white boy hip-hop head,” the same as the character. Influential hip-hop figures like Nas, Biggy, Outkast and Method Man all hit the scene around 1994, when the film is set. The music was important to Levine, and it’s important to the movie.

“As much as I adore and worship Ben Kingsley,” Levine says, “having Method Man on the set was an absolute thrill. That was so cool.”

You could, in fact, view The Wackness as an entry in the growing genre of film the Los Angeles Times once dubbed New Jack Cinema — movies such as Boiler Room, Black and White and Requiem for a Dream, which consciously draw upon hip-hop’s style to tell stories that may or may not seem like traditional hip-hop narratives.

Levine likes all three of those movies and others such as Kids which, though “very flawed,” shares a similar vibe. For him, however, the hip-hop influence is “not like a conscious thing,” he says.

For a generation that grew up with hip-hop as the dominant popular art form, the style “permeates every aspect of what you do” — the way you talk, your “everyday style,” the art you make.

This may sound weird, it being about a drug dealer and all, but watching The Wackness brings to mind The Graduate. It’s a hip-hop-iteration of a familiar coming-of-age theme.

The Wackness has marijuana, hip-hop, graffitti, guns, several MTV-style interludes and an agreeably postmodern narrative style, none of which is found in The Graduate. But both are generation-defining films, the kind that come along now and then … and that occasionally have the power to deeply touch an audience with their truthfulness and insight.

That’s how some people reacted to The Wackness during early screenings at the Sundance Film Festival in January. Not everybody. But some.

“I was not prepared for that reaction,” Levine says.

It’s too early to call The Wackness a Zeitgeist movie — let’s see how a mass audience reacts to it. But that is the kind of statement Levine was striving for.

That is an ambitious goal, especially coming from a filmmaker who’s only previous work is a 2006 teen slasher film, All the Boys Love Mandy Lane, that still hasn’t been released in the United States (though it’s had several release dates).

Mandy Lane, shot in central Texas, had a mostly no-name cast. Levine’s script for The Wackness was good enough to attract stellar talent, most notably Kingsley — whom Levine and the cast referred to as “Sir Ben.”

“I heard he wanted to be called that, and we didn’t want to tick him off,” Levine says, though he says the venerated actor was a joy to work with. People were intimidated before he arrived on set, but he put everyone at ease.

Showing amazing breadth, Levine now is writing an adaptation of a spy novel, The Echelon Vendetta, that he says he may or may not direct. “I want to establish that I can do different kinds of films,” he says.

The new documentary American Teen plays more like an involving TV reality show. You will immediately identify with or be involved and invested in the lives of one or more of these diverse teens just trying to survive Senior year!

American Teen focuses upon several small town Indiana high school Seniors; a rich, popular girl, two jocks, the artsy girl and the gamer/band geek. The piece is narrated by pretty, smart, artsy film buff Hannah Bailey who is a liberal misfit in the conservative town. She can’t wait to graduate and head to L.A. for film school and freedom but she is crippled by the meltdown of her romance. Colin Clemens is the basketball team star who suffers unrelenting pressure from his Elvis-impersonator dad to get a scholarship and play on a top team (see, this movie has bizarre reality show written all over it!).

You’ve got cute but acne-plagued Jake Tusing, the band geek who is quite charming and funny but full of self-doubt and on a quest for a reliable girlfriend. Megan Krizmanich is the golden girl, mean girl, prom queen, student council V. P. and daughter of a rich surgeon. Don’t get on her bad side! She rules her school but has her own personal demons. Mitch Reinholdt is a gorgeous hottie Varsity basketball jock who is really a nice guy but bows to peer pressure when his buds think Hannah just isn’t good enough for him to date. Creative animated dream sequences by different filmmakers accompany the teens’ various daydreams or nightmares.

A group of bank robbers find their $20 million plan interrupted by a hard-boiled detective

Doesn’t sound like there will be much dancing in this one. I LOVED him in Stomp the Yard. I must have rewound that opening scene a dozen times when I watched the DVD last year. He is unbelievable!!

For Bone Deep, Chris will play a crime gang member. Luckily, the singer has several other movies in the works:
