“I learned it pretty fast,” Borgstrom said of learning English. “I was thrown into fifth grade and I didn’t have any tutor; I just went off on my own.”

With the language well under her belt, she’ll show off her singing skills at the finals for “Livingston Sensation,” set for 7 p.m. Saturday at the amphitheater outside the historical Livingston County Courthouse in downtown Howell.

For Borgstrom, singing has always been a part of her life, including participating in her middle school choir and playing the lead role in Brighton High School’s production of “Hello, Dolly!”

“It’s pretty much that I can just express myself in a way that’s more creative,” said Borgstrom, who lives just west of Brighton in Genoa Township.

When it comes to creativity, Borgstrom enjoys the music of Utada Hikaru, an artist who is fluent in two languages, just like Borgstrom.

“She plays the guitar, she plays the piano, she sings — she has so much to contribute to music,” Borgstrom said of the American-born Japanese singer.

Borgstrom hopes in addition to speaking fluent English and Swedish that she will one day soon be fluent in German. She plans on majoring in secondary education and minoring in German when she starts school at Grand Valley State University this month.

For now, the focus is on finding the perfect song for the “Livingston Sensation” finals.

“I think it will take a lot of motivation,” she said. “It’s not just going to be taking a song and singing it. (The winner’s) going to have to have a lot of passion behind what they’re singing.”

Still, Borgstrom said she’s been singing long enough to offer some valuable advice for other aspiring singers.

“I would tell them not to focus so much on the competitive side of singing,” Borgstrom said. “You just have to remember having a voice is a natural talent.”

The Jonas Brothers on ‘TRL’ on Monday

NEW YORK — The Jonas Brothers kicked off Jonas Brothers Fan Week on “TRL” on Monday (August 11), to the deafening delight of the hundreds of fans — mostly teenage girls — who lined up around the block and sat through a torrential morning downpour for a chance to see the guys.

But the fans weren’t the only ones who were amped. “We’re doing so good and we’re just so excited,” Nick Jonas said on the show Monday. “Tomorrow the new record releases. It’s just a really amazing time in our lives.”

“We’re so excited we’re going to go to Virgin Megastore across the street and wait in line [to buy our new album, A Little Bit Longer],” Joe Jonas chimed in.

Fittingly enough, some of the fans gathered outside were brought up to see the boys tape their appearance live and in-person. “We do anything for our fans and we owe everything we have to them,” Kevin said.

The brothers, of course, are performing at the forthcoming MTV Video Music Awards, and they’re also nominated for Best Pop Video, along with Britney Spears and Tokio Hotel. And while they skimped on the details of their performance, Nick did say, “We have some tricks up our sleeve.”

“We can’t tell what we’re performing — but it will be our second single,” Kevin teased the audience.

Miley Cyrus and Daniel Radcliffe have topped a list of Hollywood’s highest earning youngsters.

Although the singer has proved she isn’t shy about shedding her clothes in the name of work - she appeared wearing just gold body paint for her 2007 Umbrella video - she refuses to strip off for a magazine.

She tells MTV.co.uk, “My mother would kill me if I posed nude!”

“When I did that metallic body paint stuff for my Umbrella video, I didn’t do it to show my body. I didn’t do it for people to like me. I did it because it was a cool visual, unexpected, and it looked hot.”

“I have done a lot of photoshoots for magazines but it’s always great to be shot for a cover because you know that you are looked at as a fashion icon.”
